My name is Maria Teresa Barbaro, I speak english, french and spanish and I love immensely my city, Matera. My parents and my grandparents lived in the "Sassi", they were part of the displaced people that the law 619/52 forced to leave their homes for hygiene problems to have a new confortable home out of the Sassi.

When I was child their stories about their life in the Sassi fascinated me. I was born directly in the "modern society", so for me their stories about the Sassi, were like funny fables. Only growing I had the possibility to understand exactly what all this meant. In the fifties The Sassi were declared "shame of Italy", but now i'm absolutely proud of all. I'm lucky because I have a unique advantage... I learned the history of that period directly from the source, thanks to my parents and especially to my grandmother.

I firmly believe in the resources of Matera, a city of immense cultural value with an heritage of 155 rock hewn churches and very precious frescoes, UNESCO World Heritage since 1993, with an invaluable historical, artistic, anthropological and of traditions heritage. I have the honor to transmit all it during my guided tours. I waiting for you in Matera!
