MADONNA DE IDRIS

PDF Print E-mail

The rock hewn church of the Madonna de Idris or Santa Maria de Idris is located to the top of the Errone Mount and is totally curved into the rock. The first detail that enchants the visitors is the wonderful view situated before the entrance in the curch.

Madonna de Idris is a church of the XVI - XV century and the origine of the name derives from the greek word Odigitria, the sacred way indicated by the virgin, but someone thinks that the name is dedicated to the water.
Its facade was rebuilt about in the fifteenth century because the church had a collapse. The interior consists of one nave with some frescoes, actually spoiled by time, but where it is visible a fresco of the seventeenth century that represents the Virgin and the child placed above the altar. Then there is a representation of the Conversion of St. Eustachio, St. Antonio da Padova and a Sacred Holy Family.

Inside there was another valuable first group of frescoes painted from the "artist of Miglionico" that now are detached from the wall for preservation reasons.
Inside, through a small passage on the left of the altar is possible to enter in the crypt of St. Giovanni in Monterrone.
