St. Barbara Church


The church of Santa Barbara is a small treasure located in the Casalnuovo area near the ravine of Matera.

The cult of Santa Barbara, grew significantly during the period of the Crusades, she was invoked as a protector of lightning and of the sudden and violent deaths. Santa Barbara is revered by the Catholic Church and by the Orthodox Church too.

St. Barbara is a church of the thirteenth century and it is one of the most representative of the Romanesque architecture of oriental inspiration.

The iconostasis contains precious frescoes, including a representation of Santa Barbara attributed to the "Artist of Miglionico", an artist working in Matera in the second half of the fifteenth century. The saint is depicted with the tower in her hands, symbol of his martyrdom. There are other important paintings including a fresco of a Virgin with Child and  other representations of Santa Barbara.


Inside and outside of St. Barbara church were found remains of burials.
