The Castle of Matera

The Castle of Matera, known as the Tramontano Castle, name of the Count most famous of the city, it is located on a hill where is possible to see all the city.

About in 1501 was built by
Giovan Carlo Tramontano. He wanted his castle in a mighty Aragonese style, with towers and arrow slits.

The count was not loved by Matera people, because to solve debt problems, he introduced new taxes exasperating the population. The economic reasons  and the "Jus Primae Noctis" induced Matera people to kill him, in fact the count was killed close the cathedral of Matera.

The castle, which today remains a mighty monument and supreme symbol of Matera medieval time, it is incomplete respect to the original project plans .
